Black Lives…We Need You

In the aftermath

There is silence

More tears than words.

What can I say?

What do I know?

Never should this be

Never again

Never

And yet it repeats

Another city

Another death.

Murder dresses as self-defense

And though we mourn

And press all the right buttons,

Like all the right pages,

Do we let the lesson

Come home to us

As the victims never will?

Close your eyes if you must

But imagine

Your skin is dark

Your hair is curly

And you are hated

Distrusted

Feared

For being strange and similar

Too human for minds wrapped in fairer skin

To be fair

To see you

To show grace

To let you be yourself without fear

Without death

Or damning

To love you as you are

To treasure your voice

Your story

Your culture

And your skin color.
